CHENNAI: Doctors and healthcare experts are pinning down hard evidence from a massive screening programme done by the Tamil Nadu government under the `Amma Arogya Thittam' to show how more than half the number of people in the state are obese, diabetic or hypertensive.
"Earlier studies showed that a quarter of our population had diabetes and nearly three in 10 had hypertension. That remains more or less the same, now the number of people bordering on diabetes and hypertension is almost two in five," said a senior public health expert.
The state screened more than 3.6 crore people above the age of 30 years in the past few months. The results showed more than 23% of men and 20% of women had hypertension while nearly 36% of women and 40 % of men had pre-hypertension.
As a solution, some doctors have proposed a tax -similar to the one introduced by Kerala government -on high-fat, high-sugar, high-salt foods.
